A straight line passes through the points (2, 5) and (6, 13). Find the equation of the line in the form y = mx + c.

Show the mark scheme and the examiner note

Answer: y = 2x + 1

  1. Gradient m = (13 − 5) ÷ (6 − 2) = 8 ÷ 4 = 2
  2. Substitute (2, 5): 5 = 2(2) + c, so c = 1
  3. Equation: y = 2x + 1

Examiner technique: One mark for the gradient, one for substituting a point, one for the finished equation. Show each of the three lines — a bare correct equation can score one mark, not three.
