State two practical measures a settlement can take to reduce the spread of a water-borne disease such as cholera, and explain how each measure works.

Answer: Boil or treat the drinking water (kills the bacteria); wash hands with soap (removes bacteria from hands before food is handled); separate the washing area from the drinking point (removes the source of contamination).

  1. Measure one with mechanism, e.g. boiling kills bacteria
  2. Measure two with mechanism, e.g. soap physically removes bacteria
  3. Both must be specific — "be careful" is not a measure

Examiner technique: The instruction "and explain how each works" means two marks per point: one for the measure, one for the mechanism. Two measures with no mechanism earns half.
