A radio station broadcasts at a frequency of 9.0 × 10⁷ Hz. The speed of light is 3.0 × 10⁸ m/s. Calculate the wavelength of the waves.

Answer: 3.3 m (3.33 m)

  1. v = fλ, so λ = v ÷ f
  2. λ = (3.0 × 10⁸) ÷ (9.0 × 10⁷)
  3. λ = 3.3 m

Examiner technique: Dividing powers of ten: subtract the indices. 10⁸ ÷ 10⁷ = 10¹, leaving 30 ÷ 9, which is 3.3.
